Algonquin College graduate student wins “Co-op Student of the Year” award

Algonquin College, the only public college in Canada's capital, Ottawa, and one of Canada's 13 Polytechnic Institutes, offers more than 50 Co-op academic programs.

Cooperative education (Co-op) allows students to integrate classroom learning with real-world experience through paid work conditions. In the two academic terms before the co-op period, students must actively participate in and successfully complete the self-paced cooperative course, warm-up activities, and workshops. Students compete for co-op positions alongside students from Algonquin College and other Canadian and international colleges and universities. Therefore, The Algonquin College Cooperative Department provides assistance in developing cooperative employment opportunities and guides the overall process.

Jayde Medland, a recent Design and Interactive Media graduate from Algonquin College, won the “Co-operative Student of the Year” award at the provincial level, presented by Experiential & Work-Integrated Learning Ontario (EWO) and at the national level, presented by Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning (CEWIL) Canada.

Medland's award follows her demonstration of exceptional commitment to work-integrated learning. In her Co-op period, she exceeded expectations by demonstrating a proactive attitude, willingness to learn, and adaptability to a dynamic work environment.

“Algonquin College is so proud of Jayde’s personal and professional accomplishments and achievements and the bravery she exhibited throughout her work term. Her welcoming and supportive employer, Natural Resources Canada, was an excellent host organization providing challenging opportunities for Jayde to excel. Work-integrated learning experiences like this one are so valuable for our students as they provide the opportunity to hone skills, gain new experiences and develop networks within their fields” offered Kristine Dawson, Associate Vice President, Experiential Learning, and Innovation.
