Douglas College: Opening Doors for Latin American Students

Douglas College, one of the leading public institutions in British Columbia, has experienced a remarkable increase in international student participation over the past decade. Maria Kalinina, Associate Director of International Enrolment, Recruitment & Regulatory Compliance, shares her perspective on the evolution of the College’s international strategy and its growing connection with Latin America.

1. How would you describe the evolution of international student participation at Douglas College and its impact on the Canadian academic community?

Maria explains that international students have become an integral part of Douglas College’s identity. Their presence has enriched the academic experience by bringing global perspectives into the classroom and fostering intercultural dialogue.

“It’s not just about the numbers,” she notes. “It’s about the energy and diversity they bring, which together help create a more inclusive learning environment with a stronger global awareness.”

2. What role does Latin America play within Douglas College’s international strategy, and what strengths do you see in students from this region?

Latin America is a cornerstone of Douglas College’s international recruitment strategy for 2025–2026. The College is strengthening its presence in key markets such as Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, while also expanding into emerging regions like Peru, Chile, Ecuador and the Caribbean.

Maria highlights the resilience, warmth and collaborative spirit of Latin American students:

“They are persistent, adaptable and deeply connected to their communities — qualities that enable them to excel both academically and socially.”

3. How does student support at Douglas College contribute to the academic and professional development of international students?

Maria emphasizes that Douglas College offers a comprehensive support system designed specifically for international students. From academic advising and career development to peer mentorship and co-op programs, students receive guidance throughout every stage of their experience.

“Our goal is to empower students, whether they’re transitioning into the Canadian workforce or preparing for a successful career in their home countries.”

4. What message would you share with young Latin Americans who dream of studying in Canada?

Maria’s message is clear:

“Believe in your potential and take the leap. Canada is a welcoming and dynamic place to study, and Douglas College is here to support you. With the right mindset and guidance, your experience can be truly transformative.”

She adds with a smile:

“As we say at Douglas: Do what you love. Be good at it.”
