Metso, a partner for positive change

In this interview, Joe Pezo, Metso's Vice President of Services for Peru & North, tells us how our partner Metso provides comprehensive solutions and services for the mineral processing industry worldwide.

1. What are your company's leading solutions (products or services) to the mining sector?

Metso is a Finnish company with more than 100 years of history. We offer a complete offering of equipment and services for mineral processing, covering different technology areas, such as crushing, grinding, flotation, filtration, thickening, smelting, and refining.

Our offerings extend beyond equipment and associated technologies. We provide a diverse range of services that are increasingly valued in the market. Our service portfolio includes components, parts, and consumables for all mineral processing equipment, specialized technical assistance, advisory, maintenance execution, metallurgical balance development, and laboratory services for test development. This comprehensive suite of services ensures that we can meet all your mineral processing needs.

In the Peru & North territory, encompassing the markets of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, and Suriname, we have experienced a remarkable 60% growth in the services we provided in 2023. This growth is a testament to the quality and professionalism of our services, and more importantly, it underscores our ability to meet the unique needs of these regional markets.

2. What initiatives and practices have your company implemented that are aimed at the sustainability of your company and its environment?

As a corporation, we have developed a value offer called "Planet Positive." This platform is the cornerstone of our serious commitment to devising and implementing various sustainable initiatives. These initiatives are not just about reducing our carbon footprint, but also about significantly impacting the environment. The scope of our initiatives extends beyond our own facilities, as we have also implemented projects at various customer sites. A concrete example is the self-sustainable container that we inaugurated last year at a major mining operation in the south of the country, which has significantly reduced the operation's environmental impact.

Our commitment to sustainability is not just a claim; it's a fact. We are making significant progress in implementing various initiatives, many of which have been recognized and certified. For instance, we were awarded the first star of the "Peru Carbon Footprint" program by MINAM last year, a testament to our efforts. We have also been certified by the VERRA international platform, which confirms that we have measured and offset the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by our participation in different events. These certifications are not just pieces of paper but proof of our dedication to sustainability.

From a sustainability point of view, our task is to deploy different actions to reduce our footprint and develop a sustained internal culture with our personnel, as we have done with the safety culture that we have forged in Metso for many years.

3. What expansion plans do you have in the short term in Peru or abroad?

Regarding expansion, we have an approved investment to expand our Service Center in Arequipa. The purchase of equipment has already started. Once again, Metso is betting on increasing its infrastructure to expand the offering we provide to our customers, to be closer to them, and to have a broader service that allows us to meet the different repair needs that the market demands.

Furthermore, we are looking to extend our service capabilities to other countries in the region, such as Ecuador, Colombia, and Suriname. This expansion will not only increase our market reach but also allow us to cater to a wider range of customer needs.
