Sustainability for the energy transition in the Peruvian and
Latin American context
On this occasion, José Carlos De Piérola, General Manager of ERM Peru and Ecuador, shares in an interview his vision on ERM and sustainability in the energy transition, focusing on the Peruvian and Latin American context.
1. What is ERM's vision regarding sustainability and the energy transition?
ERM has a global vision and local expertise that helps understand the challenges and opportunities of our region in the energy transition. Our vision regarding sustainability in this process focuses on providing the appropriate technical support for transforming industry and society, promoting responsible practices that contribute to generating inclusive and equitable well-being. We are committed to leading the way towards operations that not only respect the environment but also consider it an asset and part of the solution to promote sustainable social and economic development in the communities where we operate.
2. Challenges and Opportunities:
2.1 What do you consider to be the biggest challenges for our region associated with the energy transition?
The topics that we consider challenging and on which we are working are:
- Impact on ecosystems and enhancement of natural capital.
- Water management and technological innovation.
- Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions and supplier development with this vision.
- Impact on local communities (integral territorial development, human rights, and multiculturalism).
- Compliance and governance, international standards and adaptation to our reality.
- Illegal and informal economies.
2.2 How does ERM see the energy transition in the businesses of our country/our region?
The energy transition is a continuous process that spans the entire life of a project. It starts internally in our company with an awareness of the impact of climate change on business profitability. This process involves understanding the importance of innovation and technology to improve our processes. In addition, we consider it crucial to integrate environmental and social risks (double materiality) in the analysis of the business, not only in our core business and the associated supply chain, but also in our contribution to better management of the territory.
As ERM, our global local strategy (glocal) enables us to understand investor and market requirements, as well as the specific challenges and needs of our local operations. This allows us to offer advice tailored to the needs of our clients.
